Social Media Marketing is the process of branding and attraction using social media, online communities, social platforms and social bookmarking websites. Over the years, there has been as much confusion over the importance of social media marketing as there is in defining the distinctions between Web 2.0 and Web 3.0. This is why I stepped back and took a year to develop my own strategies that incorporated search engine optimization and Internet marketing in this SMM process. A year ago I assumed this was nothing new at all. Social media marketing was at it’s peak when I began explaining the phenomenal SEO and marketing considerations to other business owners. Yet, in August 2008, there were no Google listings for SMO and Social media Marketing either. This term is now buzzing through the Net, though many still have not grasped the necessity of this for their business. It took until most recently to see major SEO companies pick up on this in my area. This began with my posting that Pittsburgh Business’s had poor Twitters representation. Now “Pittsburgh Social Media Marketing” and “Pittsburgh Twitter Marketing” has become like Stratego between the Twitter SEO experts.
I remember meeting a gentleman on Myspace that inquired about what I meant by Social Media Optimization … I laugh at this now because that was the tag line I was using prior to branding as “Pittsburgh SEO”. Regardless, I explained it to him as best as I could. He replied back that it was interesting and that was the last I heard from him. Maybe he laughed because he already knew, too.
