Good Marketing #1 – I’m going to “put myself out there” and go way back to the 70′s when I was a kid … YES I am THAT old … There are some funny commercials that are epic examples of “good marketing” :)

I have a client that has a “cursed” Facebook account. No matter what conservative marketing strategies are made, Facebook blocks this client’s ability to add friends after just a few internal invites, therefore the development must come from external resources or personal email invites. Meanwhile, most are friends the client chats with on different pages and in groups. It has become a frustrating situation for this business owner, so … I logged into the account and implemented a new process of adding friends. The client was impressed and wanted to know how I managed to add so many in one day, and a quick witted … ”Ancient SEO Secret” … rolled off of my tongue :)

LOL, ”ancient SEO secret” is inspired from the old – “Ancient Chinese Secret” – Calgon commercial above (click play and watch it). This funny commercial always comes to mind – over their primary “Calgon Take Me Away” slogan – as a way of teasing someone that wants to know a social media marketing or seo secret that blows them away … an inside joke, per say, that was derived by what I consider to be “GOOD MARKETING” … no matter how corny the funny commercials of the 70s may be (kind of like the styles of the 80s that keep coming to mind … another blog topic for sure! :)

Regardless, the topic here is GOOD MARKETING, SOCIAL MEDIA and SEO SECRETS.

I still watch the commercials with the same interest as I did as a child. The appeal has never been so much as what to buy as how entertaining they are and now I love to gage the different testing and air strategies of this generation of marketing. This is how I confirmed when Facebook and Twitter were finally adopted as essential business marketing sources to major corporations (over the Internet hype), as well as how I learned when to delve into prospecting in particular markets because they were starting to do the same in their commercials. It was exciting to sneak my Twitter comment on CMT while they were hosting the awards … One night, I woke my “hubby” up around 3:30 A.M. to watch the new Axe Body Wash commercial because this was the only time frame where they tested the full version and the condensed versions back to back … to later show the condensed versions during the day / eve. … I could go on and on, but the point here is that you can learn a lot from commercials; as well as the new statistics regarding TV Commercial and Social Media Marketing. People are drawn to videos, flash and social media. Additionally, they are NOT changing the TV channel, during commercials, as it is presumed that we still do … similar to when I watched commercials as a child … product / program launches are creating new trends and commercials with profound subliminal messages and appeal that will last generations. (Make sure to clarify these for your children … some are like the old Camel logo, cartoons and music … controversial /confusing sexual and political messages). We can accomplish the same in our “online TV show” efforts via videos, flash presentations, mobile apps, etc.

These are obviously a few quick examples of, what I consider “good marketing”. In fact, The Video Consumer Mapping (VCM) study – Council for Research Excellence (CRE) – 2010 statistics of 376 adults observed for 752 days – confirm that I am not the only one to agree (even if YOU are not aware that YOU like commercials, too)!

- 85% of adults watch 26 advertising or promotional breaks. This equates to 73 minutes each day)

- Only 14% of viewers change channels during commercials, compared to 11% just before and 13% just after the commercials.

- 21% of TV viewers change rooms after the commercial, in comparison to 19% before and 20% during the commercials.

- 55% of viewers were solely engaged with media; in comparison to the 45% that were multi-taking during commercials.

“When commercials come on, people stay with the TV. They only go to the kitchen if they’re hungry, and they don’t fight over the remote,” said Laura Cowan, Vice President and Media Director of RJC Advertising and Chairperson of the CRE’s Media Consumption & Engagement Committee. “For years, media professionals have been wrestling with the question of whether viewers actually pay attention to commercial breaks. This new data, the result of actually embedding observers with a statistically significant number of TV viewers, is a major development in terms of learning what people watch and how they watch it.”

How does this all correlate to the “ancient seo secret” – social media marketing – Facebook success? Here are the hints …

WATCH & DUPLICATE …
Study / continuously watch those who are accomplishing the goals that you are not, tweak to apply to your goals and duplicate. Learn from the commercials and videos, as well as the daily strategies that competitors, mentors and online gurus take to become successful.

MULTI-TASK …
You’ve got to be able to do more things at once – don’t get trapped in Facebook alone or doing one major thing in there – develop skills, multi-tasking / multi-channel marketing processes. The same for your overall marketing strategy – mix it up – use different resources – commerical do help; even if just through online video and podcast spotlights.

DEVELOP A SENSE OF HUMOR …
It is social networking / social media marketing for a reason. Make sure to have fun and give of yourself, PLUS you have to dive into online marketing with a sense of humor or you will become frustrated while learning and developing.

NICHE / NEW / PRODUCTS / SERVICES …
“The world is your oyster” when it comes to niche and new; even if you have to become creative and tap in on niche / new ways of presenting your product(s) and service(s) to target markets. Niche products, new products, niche services, new services or presenting the old to niche/ new markets … put on your creative “thinking cap” each time while knowing that these are where and how you can gain advantages where you were failing to do well. Online branding is everything … keep it fresh!

TEST … TEST … TEST … SWITCH THINGS UP TO “BLOW THEM AWAY” …
This is self explanatory, but I will break it down for those who claim that they are testing and switching things up correctly, though not producing expected results. You have to step back and do #1 (above) or ask others to help with opinions / suggestions, and “once it ain’t broke” (when you are seeing results – even if it is just one or two likes or comments) don’t fix it (stop testing) and “go with it” until the trends demand the process again.

Are these suggestions “Ancient Chinese Secrets” to you? Do you not have the time or need hands on help? <a title="Need help with Facebook marketing?

As 2010 would have it, my 1st video training took a “back seat” to an extremely important person in my life … My 10 year old son, Jonny “MJ” Charlton. I am using it as our January 2010 Video Marketing example. We hope that you pay attention to this case study and use this information to help YOUR business with video marketing :)

As the ball dropped on Jan 1, 2010, Jonny “MJ” Charlton (my son) appeared in a dress shirt and pants, Michael Jackson glove and hat, socks dirty from running outside to set off fireworks and EXCITEDLY announced that he wanted to make a video to get started on his 2010 New Year goal. I stood scratching my head wondering what he was up to. Roxy and Coby got the video camera ready. We ventured into a room with enough space (still unpacking from trip to Florida) and my son instructed us to play the song Billie Jean by Michael Jackson. When he was finished, he instructed us to load the video to Youtube and TAUNTED ME that he had made his video before me – LOL :)

We recorded as he danced to Billie Jean and had a great time – SEE VIDEO BELOW.

He announced that he knew what he wanted to do for a living, “be a Michael Jackson impersonator and professional WWE wrestler”, so that he could use these to help kids with Aspergers, ADHD, ADD, ODD and this spectrum of disabilities. Coby and I did as he requested. I launched his coordinating blog and told all of our family / friends. The next day we promoted his video a bit on January 1st and a few more hours during the month. In total, it was about 1 1/2 day of marketing in January 2010. According to the Youtube statistics, Jonathan’s Michael Jackson video received 3,391 hits, 37 Comments and 30 five star rankings in 31 days? Google Analytics shows his blog received over 292 visits although the link was added to his video post mid-month. He is extremely proud!

Video Marketing Training #1 – What does this mean to you?

Well, this 10 year old started the 2010 new year with a goal in mind and the passion to accomplish it quickly. In comparison to some of the videos we come across and that I have marketed in the past, Jonny’s Michael Jackson video had fast branding success in under 2 days of video marketing. He did some things that many work at home and corporate professionals refuse to do:

1) He made a solid marketing decision and acted upon it quickly.

2) He utilized effective video marketing resources.

3) He asked help from people that were skilled in particular areas where he is not.

4) He chose a fantastic niche based on market popularity and personal interests.

Most of all, he dropped any insecurities about his chubby belly, not having the best dance planned and being shy about performing in front of others … went with the Nike “just do it” philosophy and just did what he set out to do.

With the Google Caffeine changes, social media marketing is even more important to your business than you could have imagined. Videos, Twitter, Press Releases, News Feeds, Blogging and other Social Sites like Myspace, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc. are you very best platforms when it comes to organic SEO and Internet Marketing. My next Video Marketing Training will discuss a network that was VERY important to my branding and development in the past year … This friend has a new video training series that will help you, too.

How did I help my little Michael Jackson Impersonator accomplish his goal?

1) I supported my tween in his marketing decision although it felt like a risk to the parent in me.

2) I immediately posted the video to YouTube while doing marketing analysis in other browser windows to determine who he was competing with & what keywords (including his name).

3) Once the video was posted, I added the title, description and keyword in the YouTube boxes.

4) I made sure to add his website link as the first text of the description and mine at the end, then set it as the main video on my Youtube homepage – http://www.youtube.com/leacharlton

5) I cloaked the link, tweeted it and sent the info to family and friends, so that they could watch, rank and comment. Some retweeted and social feed for us, so that he could get the exposure.

6) I took a few minutes to post his Michael Jackson video as responses to other’s similar videos.

7) He already owned the domain, though it had a very old website builder on it. I added WordPress, a cute template and the content that he dictated to me, while I had Coby posting his video to locations on the Internet, ping and feed. This took a few hours of the first day of marketing.

Imagine if you had over 3391 Youtube video views and 292 hits to your new website in less than 2 days of marketing. You would be much better off in your business, as a result of video marketing, than you were last year.

The following is his Michael Jackson Impersonation Video – Let us know what you think!

Twitter has really stepped it up a notch over the past few months.

It is awesome to have the Retweet (RT) link back again. This had been disabled for over a year and forced us to manually RT @ users opposed to clicking a link and moving forward with communications. Some might not think this is a huge deal, but those who gravitated to Twitter applications like Tweet Deck know what I am referring to here. Internet users and social media marketers prefer not to have additional steps in their usage. Having the ability to click Retweet is one of those little things we like to use.

Twitter Trends is connecting both social and marketing Tweeple. It is such a user friendly features that helps us gain additional followers and exposure where a social user may not have connected with others at that interest level because they conditioned to connecting with exciting friends and not the fact that Twitter is a social networking site.

As always the Twitter SEO advantages are exciting …

Best of all, the new Twitter Lists are going to rock the social media marketing world because it permits us to track target markets and niche list build as if we have 20 additional Twitters at work for us. This feature will make it much easier to increase followers, sales conversions and blog subscribers, though not without a little work on creating, developing and utilizing your Twitter Lists.

HOW TO USE TWITTER LISTS?

I actually prefer using their “inhouse” features to 3rd party Twitter applications where we run the risk of hacking, hijacking or account suspension. Most popular Twitter applications are excellent tools, but as more and more shrewed online marketers work hard at building lists, some of these substandard application do jeopardize our accounts.

Social Media Marketing (SMM) is the process of branding and attraction using social media, online communities, social platforms and social bookmarking websites. If done correctly, social media marketing increase traffic to your website, provides targeted exposure and conversions for a blog, website, wiki, network, etc. It involves creating social network profiles and marketing within the networks to attract followers that will connect between communities, as well as with your personal marketing entities. If the social media marketing process is established with search engine optimization in mind, then it is social media optimization and marketing that is accomplished. As with Internet Marketing, there is always a suggested process and protocol that is considered ethical according to the leaders in the industry. Social Media Marketing provides more flexibility when it comes to SEO standards.

Social Media Optimization (SMO)
Social Media Optimization is a more precise process of increasing branding on the Internet, search engine rankings and attraction marketing. It is a combination of the two facets of the Internet Marketing process that we call Social Media Marketing and Search Engine Optimization. Social Media Optimization is a way to optimize and integrate within social networking communities and social media platforms.

—————————————————————————————————

Over the years, there has been as much confusion over the importance of social media marketing as there is in defining the distinctions between Web 2.0 and Web 3.0. This is why I stepped back and took a year to develop my own strategies that incorporated search engine optimization and Internet marketing in this SMM process. A year ago I assumed this was nothing new at all. Social media marketing was at it’s peak when I began explaining the phenomenal SEO and marketing considerations to other business owners. Yet, in August 2008, there were no Google listings for SMO and Social media Marketing either. This term is now buzzing through the Net, though many still have not grasped the necessity of this for their business. It took until most recently to see major SEO companies pick up on this in my area. This began with my posting that Pittsburgh Business’s had poor Twitters representation. Now “Pittsburgh Social Media Marketing” and “Pittsburgh Twitter Marketing” has become like Stratego between the Twitter SEO experts.

I remember meeting a gentleman on Myspace that inquired about what I meant by Social Media Optimization … I laugh at this now because that was the tag line I was using prior to branding as “Pittsburgh SEO”. Regardless, I explained it to him as best as I could. He replied back that it was interesting and that was the last I heard from him. Maybe he laughed because he already knew, too.
